4 Major Benefits Of Having A Water Softener

by Scarlett Ross

Because most people have water from the tap that's safe to drink, they don't put much thought into how the water can be improved. But a water softener can make a massive difference, not just with regards to taste, but in the quality of the water itself. Maybe you've heard that water softeners have a lot of benefits but aren't sure what they are. If so, keep reading below to discover four major advantages that soft water has over hard.

No Water Spots

One of the first things you'll notice if you have hard water is that much of your silverware (in addition to dishes and other kitchenware that is put through the dishwasher) will have water spots as a result. These are essentially small mineral deposits left behind by the hard water -- calcium and magnesium, mostly. If you want to get rid of these spots, you'll need a water softener that will remove the aforementioned chemicals and, as a result, will leave your utensils looking new and shiny.

Softer Clothes

If you have a water softener installed at the source of your property's water, then you can count on other great advantages too. For example, a washing machine that uses hard water will leave many fabrics feeling coarse to the touch, and may even leave behind residue. Soft water, on the other hand, won't wear out fabrics, and will keep them feeling soft even after dozens of wash cycles.

Appliance Longevity

Yet another benefit of having soft water is the money you save by protecting your appliances. A gas water heater, for example, will be corroded much more quickly if it has hard water running through it as opposed to soft. The same is true of other appliances as well, from a washing machine to a dishwasher. Some people may initially hesitate to install a water softener in their home because of the cost, but when compared to the savings generated simply by sparing your appliances the abuse of hard water, there is no doubt that a water softener pays for itself (and then some) over the long term.

Better Water Pressure

If you've noticed that your shower head no longer delivers water with the pressure it used to, it's probably because the residue left by hard water is clogging the flow of water. With a water softener, you'll never have to worry about decreased water pressure ruining your showers, because there will be little, if any, chemical build-up.

Gardening For Aesthetics

If you aren't interested in growing your own fruits and veggies, gardening becomes more about aesthetics than it does about functionality. I started thinking carefully about what I could do in order to make my yard more beautiful a few years ago, so I began tearing out the weeds and focusing on creating a more welcoming space. I added a few trees and shrubs, renovated my flower beds, and started focusing on finding ground covers that would look great. This blog is all about gardening to improve the aesthetics of your yard. Check it out to learn how you can make your land more beautiful.
